What brought SPBH to your mind to create? Such characters like the pirates of course and your voice character Daniel the Turtle?
In my script writing class in grad school, my professor told me when creating an idea...combine things you love. I loved pirates growing up, my parents would throw me pirate birthday parties. To get my presents, I had to use a treasure map to find them in my house, backyard, and even in the community.
My favorite animal is a turtle. I had my own turtle farm growing up. It had a pond in the middle with planet life and even turtle apartments in it. The apartments were these little caves that they would hibernate in during the winter. How about a pirate and turtle together for these wacky adventures? That's how the skit on my internet college radio show was formed.
What reaction from the viewers were you hoping to get and have you been successful with that thus far?
So far the reaction has been amazing. I wasn't sure if people would like our humor in our animation. It's the greatest feeling when people tell Dahveed (SPBH co-creator) and I that they are huge fans. The best part is that it's not just here in Southern California, but worldwide people love the show.
Can you share the minds behind the SPBH team of creators?
Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy from Smorgasbord Production is the co-creator along with me. He has done animation for Sci-Fi Channel, Comedy Central, G4's Attack of the Show, and even ADs for the NYC Time Square Bill-Board. I may not have an animation background but I co-owned Level 27 Clothing for 9 years, worked at Disney as a graphic designer, was a special effects assistant for the movie "The Devil's Tomb", built head pieces for Disneyland's "Pixar Play" Parade, and was an AR Rep for an indie record label. Dahveed is an amazing artist & animator and we work very well together writing & promoting Supa Pirate Booty Hunt.
How did you decide the names of the characters and their role? It's very inventive.
Cpt Zack Stevers is named after Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell. I'm a huge fan of the show and thought Zack's character kinda reminded me of Cpt Zack Stevers. If you take my first name Steve and last name Sievers and you combine them you get...Stevers. Daniel the Turtle is named after Daniel Johns the lead singer and guitarist for my favorite band Silverchair. Of course I gotta have the pirate has the main hero while Daniel is his little sidekick building gadgets for him.
How well did you think Pirates and Zombies relate to one another in your episodes/adventures?
For anyone who saw my artwork for Level 27 Clothing, I'm a big fan of zombies. So I had to figure out a way for them into the show. The main villain is Dr. Vile and his henchmen are zombies. However there is something wrong with his zombie making formula. Some reason they turn out to be huge stoner zombies.
When you started this on college radio did you imagine it to be an actual animated show?
No not at all. I was just doing a skit because I was the general manager of the radio station at the time. I wanted to set a good example of taking the radio show seriously to my fellow students. I didn't know how big the skit had gotten until the summer of 2004. That summer I went on the whole Vans Warped Tour having a booth for Level 27 Clothing. I always got complements from people at every stop. However it was Vancouver Canada that a girl asked me to do the Daniel the Turtle voice for her voicemail on her cell phone. It was at that point when I was like wow...I got to do something with this project. When it came to do my grad school thesis project, I was like let me turn the skit into a cartoon show because I love animation.
Did you do all the illustrations or hire the creative director to initially give it life?
Dahveed is the art director and lead animator for Supa Pirate Booty Hunt. His art style is perfect for what I was looking for.
What do you enjoy most about the life of SPBH to date?
So many to pick from. I enjoyed wearing the Daniel the Turtle costume at San Diego Comic Con, on stage at Vans Warped Tour, and on stage with Sonny Moore DJing. But I would say my favorite is our packed house panel at Anime Expo Convention. You can see a video of all these things on our website.
Have you taken SPBH on the road or can only be experienced online/TV?
We have taken Supa Pirate Booty Hunt on the road to Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Washington DC, and more at conventions, concerts, etc. I would love to one day have our first every Supa Pirate Booty Hunt rock tour where we could travel the world and put on shows. You can always experience anything we do in our video blogs. We make sure to document everything we do in the land of SPBH.
The colors of each cell are so vibrant and bold. It really stand strong among most other animated series. Do the colors mean anything specific to the motif or the characters personalities?
Dahveed's art style has always been vibrant and bold colors. I've always enjoyed the thick black outline on characters and it matches the characters personalities perfectly.
Are there any special surprises or character additions?
Mebooba is gonna be a nice surprise for everyone. People might have seen pictures of the sea creature in our video blogs. When we created her, we wanted a sea creature siren. What is it that make men weak? Something that a pirate was driving a ship, but could not help steer it into? How about a sea creature made out of boobs? Mebooba was born. She is gonna be in our pilot animation. Look for that animation later this year.
How do you come up with the script and creative direction?
Well each script is around Cpt Zack Stevers struggles with himself. He is trying to be a super hero, but his kryptonite is that he is a pirate. He loves booty both treasure and ladies. He can't help but use lame pick up lines on any lady he comes across. Lucky his turtle sees everything from a scientific point of view and tries to keep his Captain out of trouble.
Out of the few I've seen is there a basic theme or a continuous story?
Yea there is a theme, more then just going after booty. If you actually take a look at poster for Supa Pirate Booty Hunt. Cpt Zack Stevers is running from island to island with a treasure map in his hand. It is his father's treasure map. His Dad is Cpt Black Stevers, the best and most feared pirate in the seven seas. Zack has grown up a spoiled rich kid, but after his Dad is eaten by Mad Cows, Zack is forced to grow up fast and finds a treasure map inside Black's hat. The map is laid out where Zack can learn hero traits and treasure to build his super hero gadgets. For season one, Cpt. Zack Stevers and Daniel the Turtle visit each island to make Cpt. Black happy.
Are we hearing screen negotiations?
We hopefully gonna be signed with an agency soon and will be pitching to TV networks later this year. If you would like to help, please continue to view our animation on youtube and tell others about it. We want to go into our pitch meeting with the highest view count possible on youtube. Every little bit helps. Visit our website www.supapiratebootyhunt.com and click on video section to watch our animation.
